5 Spice Adds a Twist to Wall Street

The new 5 Spice Fusion & Sushi Bar opened December 3 in the former Deep restaurant on Bend’s Wall Street. Owner Lilian Chu says she hopes to provide Central Oregon with a world-class dining experience featuring the finest seafood, hand-cut meats and sushi while using many locally produced ingredients.  “5 Spice Fusion and Sushi Bar is devoted to serving simple food and supporting the local community,” said Chu.

Chu has been particularly innovative in helping local nonprofits from her revenue sharing fundraising component.  She recently donated 20 percent of food sales to the KIDS Center and Tower Theatre during a special 5 Spice Community Week. Next year Volunteers in Medicine will join 5 Spice for its Community Week so another nonprofit organization may benefit from the food sale revenue program.
Chu reported that Tetsuo Kuronuma joined the 5 Spice team. “Tetsuo will be our sushi head chef.  He is licensed in Japanese Cuisine in Tokyo, Japan. He was the Sky chef to Japan Airlines and former owner of Aoba Sushi in Portland as well as head chef for Bush Garden in Seattle and Portland.  We’re so fortunate he is now a member of our team.  Greg Unruh, a well known chef who owned Cork’s in downtown Bend, is a member of our fusion food advisory team.”

Entrees at 5 Spice include hibachi Miso Organiz chicken breast with coconut ginger rise and Schichimi Pepper Sesame Crusted Rack of Lamb with marble mashed potatoes and peppercorn sauce. At the sushi bar you’ll find special Nigiri Sushi such as seared ahi tuna with snow crab and ginger ponzu sauce or avocado wrapped around rice topped with unagi and tobiko along with the typical sushi rolls made with the fresh seafood, rice and vegetables.
