At the County Commission meeting this Monday, August 25 at 10am, the commissioners plan to hold the final public hearing prior to placing the City of Bend’s request for a transportation measure on the November 2008 ballot to keep Bend Area Transit service running to Deschutes River Woods.

The City of Bend and Deschutes County's staff have been working to meet the August 25 deadline, the last day to legally squeeze something into the November ballot, but problems with measure language and boundary descriptions resulted in two continuances in the public process.

"We are ready to go with a committee of over 50 volunteers, our website is up, we have our subcommittee structure in place, and with the approval by the county commission on Monday we’ll have a formal ballot name and number so we can file our PAC paperwork with the State Elections Division," said Mike Schmidt, co-chair of Citizens for Bend Area Transit and a volunteer backer of the measure. "This is so important for the thousands of riders who have used the current Bend Area Transit (BAT) system each month, and the over 617,000 trips BAT has experienced since it began in September of 2006, for the long term economy vitality of our community, for seniors, students, workers and those in need of a demanding and growing Dial-A-Ride services."
