Commute Options Reports on Drive Less Challenge

Results of the Drive Less Challenge were impressive. Lucas Alberg from Bend Broadband won the grand prize-a custom made J Livingston bicycle from Bend Velo. This year, 287 individuals registered for the all new-Drive Less Challenge saving money and improving their health.

Thousands participated in the Commute Options Week’s 21st birthday celebration, individuals across Central Oregon learned how making more trips outside the family car can help create healthy vibrant communities.

Total miles saved: 6,975.12

Bike Trips: 678

Walk Trips:  125

Carpool Trips:  292

That means:

15,235 motor vehicle miles eliminated

635 gallons of gas conserved saving participants over $10,000 in gas money which equals more than 500 pounds of Carbon Dioxide eliminated from our air.

Two companies in Bend did particularly well saving trips-special recognition goes to Advanced Energy, who as a group saved over $1,000 at the gas pump among 37 participating employees. G5’s 40 participants reduced more than 900 miles during the week!

The region’s first tri-County Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit was held at the Madras Aquatic Center. A gathering of professionals from Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties to discuss current bicycle and pedestrian projects across the region. There was a special appearance by Dan Burden, community design expert.

Dan Burden spoke at St. Charles Bend! 160 people met the former National Geographic photographer turned sustainable community design promoter. Dan shared his perspective built from  decades in the business of street design, traffic calming, living streets, public safety, bicycling, and greenways. Dan’s presentation showcased a holistic vision for creating healthy, livable, sustainable and prosperous communities. Thanks to City Club of Central Oregon and Kids@Heart for making Dan feel welcome in Bend!


From all over Oregon (and California!) Safe Routes to School advocates gathered in downtown Bend for the first ever “Walk + Bike Retreat and Trainings.” 65 individuals came together to share, teach and learn how we can get our communities moving. The Walk + Bike Retreat was sponsored by Commute Options, Bicycle Transportation Alliance and ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program.
