100 Million Americans Are Eligible to Access Free Online Tax Software at IRS.gov

The Free File Alliance, a coalition of industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the Internal Revenue Service, today urged taxpayers to take advantage of the IRS Free File program before the April 17 tax deadline. IRS Free File provides free online tax software for all Americans with a 2011 Adjusted Gross Income of $57,000 or less. The service can be accessed at www.irs.gov/freefile.

“IRS Free File is the smart decision for taxpayers who want step-by-step tax help without the cost,” said Tim Hugo, Executive Director of the Free File Alliance. “The service is a portal to free tax software that completely simplifies the filing process and can deliver your refund in as little as 10 days. Free File is the fast and free option for last-minute filers.”

IRS Free File provides comprehensive, step-by-step federal return preparation and e-filing assistance for about 100 million Americans—or 70 percent of taxpayers. All Free File software offers a suite of commonly used forms that fit most tax situations.

Taxpayers can access IRS Free File via the IRS website, www.irs.gov/freefile. After selecting the “Free File” option, users will find a list of Free File Alliance member companies, and may either choose the one that fits their needs or utilize the “help me find a company” tool. Upon choosing a tax software offering, taxpayers will be transferred to the company’s website to prepare, complete and electronically file their federal income tax returns at no cost.
