Dog Food Shortage at the Shelter – A Call for Donations

Month long event to focus on finding homes for pets

The Humane Society of the Ochocos reports a pressing need for dog food donations as their supply has become quite short. With a maximum canine population capacity of just 36 dogs, shelter manager Janelle Moore says the facility currently cares for about 40 dogs on a daily basis. “With so many dogs in the shelter we go through close to 40 pounds of kibble on a daily basis and we also try to add a little soft food as a treat,” she says, “which they really appreciate.” Donations of dry and canned dog food will be helpful particularly during the busy spring puppy season.

In addition, May is a busy month for the Humane Society of the Ochocos as the Pet Adoptation 2012 gets underway at the shelter. To help bring attention to the HSO’s on-going mission to care for homeless pets in Crook County the Pet Adoptathon 2012 founded by the North Shore Animal League America is also sponsoring the 2012 Pet Adoptathon “Why I Am Adopting A Mutt-i-gree” (Shelter Pet) Essay Contest. The contest is open to new adopters who are approved and successfully complete a new adoption of a dog, cat, puppy or kitten from the HSO though the month of May 2012. The Grand Prize for the winning essay is a trip for four to Warner Bros. studios in Los Angeles, CA. More information is available on the shelter’s website; www.humanesocietyochocos.com.

Anyone looking for a new pet companion is encouraged to visit the shelter during the month of May to take advantage of the reduced price adoptions. Pet food donations can also be dropped off at the shelter during regular business hours; at the New 2 You Stop ‘n’ Shop Thrift Store (Wed. through Sat.) located at 801 N. Lamonta and at Hometown Animal Hospital, 1250 NW Harwood Ave — both locations in Prineville.

The Humane Society of the Ochocos, founded in 1995, serves more than 1,000 animals each year. HSO is a non-profit, no-kill shelter that serves as a resource for all of Crook County, as well as surrounding areas. The organization is dedicated to finding loving, permanent homes for animals by matching people with the pet that is right for them.

Donations to the Humane Society of the Ochocos are tax deductible and receipts for pet food donations will be available on-site at the shelter which is located at 1280 S. Tom McCall Road near the Prineville Airport. Call 541-447-7178 for more information.
