Signature Drive Begins for Trapfree Oregon 2014 Anti-Trapping Initiative

Locally based TrapFree Oregon (TFO) has begun a signature drive for its 2014 Ballot Initiative.

“We need about 1800 sponsorship signatures this time around and we’re getting them largely from the Bend Area”, said Lucinda Baker- TFO director.

To get the required signatures, TFO is holding open-house type meetings at the Environmental Center December 12 from Noon to 7pm. Attendees can sign the petition, take signature templates and educational materials so they can help gather signatures, make donations, see live trap demonstrations and ask any questions they may have about traps, trapping or the TFO Initiative.

Next spring, TFO will begin gathering well over 100,000 signatures to get the Initiative placed on the ballot so a large part of the educational program will move over the toward the more populous Portland metro area.

“We have found that at least 90 percent of the public have no idea that wild animal traps are set all over the state- all year long, so our main mission is education,” said Ms. Baker.

About TrapFree Oregon

TFO was started by a gentleman from Joseph, Oregon in response to his dog getting caught in a leghold trap while hiking. He spent seven years developing an educational website publicizing the cruel, inhumane and dangerous practice of trapping. A grassroots group sprang up in Bend in early 2012, in response to a rash of dog trappings, devoted to public education and the passage of a ballot initiative in 2014 significantly restricting the use of animal traps in Oregon.
