Celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake!

0

As the Bend Chamber continues to prepare for our trip to China in October, we thought we’d take the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year!

Of all the traditional Chinese holidays, Chinese New Year is by far the most important and the longest, lasting for 15 days. Often known as the Spring Festival, the holiday marks the end of the winter season. The holiday is also referred to as the Lunar New Year since the Chinese New Year begins on the first day of the lunar calendar. This year Chinese New Year starts on February 10.

Did you know 2013 is the year of the Snake? The Snake is actually one of the 12-year cycle of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac and are related to the Chinese Calendar. The Snake is a good omen meaning your family will not starve. This could be perceived as you being good in business or having a willingness to sacrifice possessions. Above all, the Snake is seen as keen, cunning, intelligent, and wise.

Customs and traditions for Chinese New Year vary widely. Typically, families will buy presents, decorations, food, and clothing for the celebration. While we have spring cleaning, prior to the new year, many families will thoroughly clean their houses to sweep away any “ill fortune” and to make room for good incoming luck.

On the eve of Chinese New Year, families will gather for a large feast with delicacies including pig, duck, chicken, and sweets. The night is usually ended with firecrackers. The next morning children will be presented with red paper envelopes filled with money and wished a happy and healthy new year by their parents.

The overall tradition of the Chinese New Year is to forget and forgive all grudges and wish peace and happiness for everyone.
