Company will commemorate by gifting $1 million to employees and five charitable organizations

Consumer Cellular, the exclusive wireless provider for AARP members, has reached one million customers, a testament to the company’s rapid growth throughout the past several years along with its most recent expansion into Redmond. To mark the occasion, Consumer Cellular will split $1 million between its employees and five national charities, as announced to their employees and customers this morning.

A video detailing the announcement can be found at: http://youtu.be/IYsRNbfeyLY.

“We wouldn’t be celebrating without our great customers and employees,” said Consumer Cellular CEO John Marick. “To commemorate this milestone, and to say ‘thank you’ one million times, we are giving $500,000 to our employees and $500,000 to charities that touch the lives of so many of our customers.”

Consumer Cellular’s 750-plus employees will each receive a portion of $500,000, divided based on tenure. Another $500,000 will be split evenly between the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Meals on Wheels Association of America and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation – a $100,000 contribution to each organization.

Consumer Cellular continues its impressive growth trend, fueled by the company’s focus on an underserved market: adults over 50 who do not wish to be confined by long-term contracts or the rigidity of typical pre- and post-paid options. In contrast to other wireless providers, Consumer Cellular allows customers to switch plans at any time without penalty and provides phones and plans that are affordable, flexible and designed to fit their unique needs.

“Our approach has really resonated with a lot of individuals and families,” added Marick, “particularly the flexibility of our plans, our U.S.-based customer support teams, and the variety of phones we offer to suit needs of casual users and heavy users alike. You just don’t see that combination from a lot of our competitors, and we hear that from our customers.”

Since 2005, Consumer Cellular has experienced tremendous growth. It has grown its customer base from 30,000 to one million, its revenue from $17 million to $250 million, and its workforce from 30 employees to more than 750.
