St. Charles Health System is awarding $37,200 to five Central Oregon nonprofits whose missions are to improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve. The largest award, for $20,000, was given to KIDS Center to continue funding its medical director position and forensic investigator services.

KIDS Center evaluates and treats more than 300 children a year who are suspected victims of abuse. It provides a safe, friendly environment where children can receive help without experiencing further trauma.

“Through our partnership with St. Charles, children suspected of abuse will receive the best care possible and St. Charles clinical staff will be provided the education and training it needs to best respond to incidences of child abuse,” said Shelly Smith, KIDS Center executive director.

Other organizations awarded funding include:

  • Healthy Beginnings, for $4,200, for screenings and referrals in the Madras area.
  • Healthy Families of the High Desert, for $3,000, to provide educational DVDs about shaken baby syndrome to new parents in the Central Oregon region.
  • Rimrock Trails Adolescent Treatment Center in Prineville, for $5,000, to provide equine therapy for teens with substance abuse-related issues.
  • The Giving Plate, for $5,000, to provide emergency food supplies to underserved families in La Pine, Sunriver, Bend and throughout the Central Oregon region.

“These organizations are working hard to improve the lives of the underserved and vulnerable residents of Central Oregon,” said Chief Financial Officer Karen Shepard. “We’re so pleased to help fund these initiatives, which are in line with St. Charles Health System’s strategic direction.”

Applications for the fall St. Charles Community Benefit funding cycle are due by August 16.  For more information, or to obtain an application form, contact Tracie Kirzy at tnkirzy@stcharleshealthcare.org.
