Nature of Words Seeks Applicants for Executive Director Position

The Nature of Words (NOW) has launched a search for a permanent executive director, with applications being accepted through June 14.  Kristin Kovalik, president of the board of directors for NOW, stated, “The Nature of Words recently completed a strategic plan, in which filling the leadership role for the organization was identified as its first priority. We are excited to be moving forward with our plan, starting with the search for a new executive director.” 

NOW, based in Bend, is a 501(c)(3) literary arts organization, founded in 2005 and recognized for its literary events and year-round creative writing programs for youth and adults. NOW serves the Central Oregon region of Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties. Its mission is to strengthen and support the High Desert region’s literary arts through community interaction with acclaimed authors and through creative writing programs.

The executive director will be responsible for the overall management of the organization. He or she will demonstrate an understanding of the organization’s mission and spirit, and will be charged with developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships for the benefit and sustainability of NOW programs and events.

Qualified candidates will have extensive experience in philanthropy, as well management of a small, rapidly growing non-profit. A development background and experience creating diverse fundraising strategies is required. Candidates should also have the ability to create cross-organization partnerships. A knowledge of and interest in the literary arts are also desirable traits. A bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field is required.

Duties include the supervision of administration and finance, events and programs, marketing and public relations, staff management, board relations and development, and long-range planning. This position is responsible for fundraising and fund development to meet both the current and long-term goals of the organization. The Executive Director reports to the organization’s board of directors.
