Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is Still Open in Deschutes County

Deschutes County would like to clear up a bit of confusion regarding how the government shutdown has affected the WIC Program. WIC in Oregon, including Deschutes County, is currently OPEN and it is BUSINESS AS USUAL. The County would like to encourage residents to come to their scheduled appointments, use their vouchers in stores as usual and to call WIC staff if needed.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant and Children (WIC), is a program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well, learn about nutrition, and stay healthy. WIC provides nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support, nutritious foods, and help accessing health care. Nutrition education is the cornerstone of the WIC Program.

Though WIC is funded nationally through the USDA, each state has a little different way that they handle the funding so some states have some money in a contingency fund (savings of sorts) to use in cases such as these. While some other states might be in a different situation, Oregon (Deschutes County) WIC is open and they look forward to seeing you!
