For the first time in its first year of operation High Desert Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (HDWRR) – located one mile east of Bend – will open its doors to the public for an Open House this Saturday, March 2h from 11am to 3pm. The Open House provides an opportunity for visitors to meet wildlife rescue and rehabilitation staff and volunteers, learn how they care for injured wildlife and then release those that they can back into the wild.
At the Open House visitors will learn:
• What to do with injured wildlife that you might encounter in your community
• What’s the right thing to do with ‘abandoned’ wildlife babies
• About plans (and the need) for a new baby deer enclosure to care for orphaned and injured babies
• About volunteer positions, and how to help hands-on during the upcoming baby season
Also available that day for visitors to meet, will be a visiting Great Horned Owl from the Sunriver Nature Center.
Visitors are encouraged to bring donations of towels, blankets and non-toxic cleaning supplies.
High Desert Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation was founded in March 2013 by Dr. Jeff Cooney and Jeannette Bonomo. The center treats a wide variety of Central Oregon wildlife including small mammals, songbirds, birds of prey, waterfowl, snakes, lizards and tortoises. Dr. Cooney and Ms. Bonomo are experienced handlers and are often called in to assist law enforcement and wildlife service professionals in situations of human-wildlife conflict.
High Desert Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation is in progress of filing it’s 501c3 non-profit status.
