Fenty_BrentI think organizations are most successful when they clearly define their purpose and strengths, build community, hire for passion and talent, and create a work environment that is challenging, supportive and that people want to be a part of.

BRENT FENTY

Executive Director

The Oregon Natural Desert Association, a Bend-based nonprofit organization with more than 4,000 members and supporters, exists to protect, defend and restore Oregon’s high desert. Our vision is to see millions of acres of beautiful and ecologically vital public land permanently protected and available for future generations to enjoy. In the past decade alone, ONDA’s efforts have led to the creation of more than 200,000 acres of wilderness, including the Oregon Badlands east of Bend, Spring Basin along the John Day River and the iconic Steens Mountain. Each year, our volunteers log thousands of hours on restoration projects in the high desert. ONDA just celebrated its 25th anniversary and looks forward to advocating for desert landscapes for years to come.

Professional Accomplishments

Brent Fenty became executive director of ONDA in 2007. Since then, in a tough economy, he has grown ONDA from a nonprofit with an annual budget of $355,000 and staff of eight to a $1.1 million operation with 12 full-time and seven part-time/seasonal employees. He has shepherded the creation of two new Oregon wilderness areas, the Badlands and Spring Basin, and has overseen growth of the organization’s restoration work – just last year, ONDA volunteers put in 4,584 hours that included planting 13,400 trees and removing 98 miles of abandoned fence. Organization membership has nearly doubled in the last three years. And in 2012, the influential conservation foundation Wilburforce selected Brent as one of three Leadership Award winners for his outstanding work.

Civic, Industry & Community Involvement

Brent is the president of the Greater Hart-Sheldon Conservation Fund, which manages roughly $15 million dedicated to preserving lands and wildlife habitat in southern Oregon and northern Nevada. He also has volunteered for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon and as a soccer coach for the Bend Parks and Recreation District.

Specific Characteristic That Distinguishes Them from Peers

Brent is passionate about public service and the betterment of his home state. A Central Oregon native who graduated from Willamette University, Brent embarked on a promising career in international relations — which included Peace Corps service in Africa and a United Nations position in New York. But he felt drawn home, believing that by working on a local scale he could do the most to benefit future generations of Oregonians.

Business Leadership Philosophy

Brent excels in collaborative solutions, bringing together land managers, landowners and others to work toward common goals. For example, he has spearheaded a proposal now before Congress for a land exchange and wilderness creation along the John Day River. It’s supported by area landowners, ranchers and others. He also empowers staff to play to their strengths, thereby getting the best results for the organization.

OConnell_GaryHire for your team with a bias, if you must have one, toward natural talent over developed skills. It is more about fit than polish. Hire the attributes that you are difficult to teach such as desire, work ethic, humility, curiosity, and a fit for your team. When it comes to execution of your business model, slow down, think about what you are doing, make a decision, take action and communicate often with your team and with your customers. Then do it again and again consistently.

Sellmann_KimberlyMy business philosophy is centered on wellness, the attainment of an individual’s emotional, physical and relational health. In human services, our job is to ensure that the people we serve are safe, healthy and as happy as possible. Margaret Theisen, our CEO has been my mentor for the past 10 years and through her I have learned these same values apply to my team and I’d like to think that they feel as supported by Full Access as those we are privileged to serve. By ensuring our employees needs and priorities are being met (whether that be personal health, caring for children or family or pursing individual goals), when it comes time to support others, we are less likely to be distracted and more able to give all that we can.

Stemach_RachelI believe that business success and intentions need to be occasionally revisited as the economy, client needs and communities evolve. To envision enjoyable, functional places in the built environment, I identify not only with the immediate needs of the client, but also how the community as a whole will interact with a space and how a structure may change over time.
