The Central Oregon Shrine Club announces the second annual Run for a Child 5K Run/Walk, a community fun run and fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children, is set for Sunday, August 10, at 9am in Bend’s Old Mill at Riverbend Park.

The event will also feature an all ages fez dash (for individuals that can’t complete the 5K, but still wish to participate) at 8:30am, the 5K at 9am, a post-race barbeque for participants, vendor booths and sponsor booths. Representatives from the Shriners Hospital for Children-Portland will be on hand to answer questions.

Each year, numerous children from Central Oregon are treated at the Shriners Hospital for Children. In 2013, 115  children from the tri-county area of Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties, received life altering treatment at the Shriners Hospital for Children, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

In 2013, the Central Oregon Shrine Club set out to increase awareness of Shriners Hospitals through an annual fundraiser, and chose to put on a family fun run as a good match for our athletically minded community. A “Shriners Sunday” was conceived in which families could participate in a run/walk for a good cause and enjoy a barbeque meal hosted by local Shriners.

Twenty-two Shriners Hospitals for Children have helped families from our local community, and around the world, overcome orthopedic limitations, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate conditions, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Since Shriners Hospitals for Children were founded in 1922, children have benefitted from Shiners’ life-saving and life-enhancing services. Shriners Hospitals for Children are specially designed to support the entire family as a child undergoes their specialty medical care, providing accommodations to families for sometimes weeks on end during a child’s treatment, so the family can support the child without incurring large amounts of bills.

To date, the Central Oregon Shrine Club has attracted the following generous Run for a Child 2014 sponsors: Les Schwab Tire Centers, American Family Insurance, Deschutes Brewery, McDonalds, Selco Community Credit Union, Wells Fargo Bank, Smolich Motors, Thistlefish Graphic Design, Art Krantz Memorial Fund, Rebond Physical Therapy, Thompson Pump and Irrigation, Thrivent Financial, Juniper Golf, Dutch Bros Coffee, Office Max, Stafford Inn Prineville, Shevlin Dental, Newport Market,10 Barrel Brewery, Footzone, Prineville Men’s Wear  and the Old Mill District.

Shriners Run for a Child is currently seeking additional sponsors at a variety of levels, from $250 to 5000, with a package of benefits that increases at each level of support.
